Command Sergeant Major (CSM) Darrin John Bohn

For more than three decades, Command Sergeant Major (CSM) Darrin John Bohn devoted his life to the United States Army, embodying the Ranger Creed and the principles of selfless service. From the jungles of Panama to the deserts of Iraq and the mountains of Afghanistan, his career spanned 35 years, marked by leadership in combat, dedication to soldiers under his charge, and service at the highest levels of command.

Born on August 12, 1963, in Saginaw, Michigan, Bohn grew up with Midwestern values that prepared him for the discipline and commitment of military life. A 1982 graduate of Bridgeport High School, he entered the Army the same year, beginning a journey that would take him from a young rifleman to the most senior enlisted positions in the U.S. military.

Bohn’s early career placed him in the ranks of the storied 101st Airborne Division, where he served as a rifle squad leader. His leadership potential was evident from the start, and within three years he was selected for service with the elite 75th Ranger Regiment. As a rifle squad leader in A Company, 1st Battalion, 75th Rangers, he participated in the daring night parachute assault on Torrijos-Tocumen Airfield during **Operation Just Cause** in Panama, a pivotal mission that helped topple Manuel Noriega’s regime.

Over the next several years, Bohn honed his leadership as a platoon sergeant, deploying to Kuwait during **Operation Iris Gold**, to Haiti during **Operation Uphold Democracy**, and to Bosnia in support of the NATO Implementation Force (IFOR). His deployments reflected the increasingly global nature of America’s commitments in the 1990s, and his presence in these missions placed him at the forefront of U.S. foreign policy on the ground.

Promoted to First Sergeant, Bohn held responsibility for three companies over a four-year period, culminating in his selection as First Sergeant of A Company, 1st Ranger Battalion. It was here, during the war in Afghanistan, that his unit distinguished itself on **Roberts Ridge** in March 2002, one of the most harrowing engagements of Operation Enduring Freedom. His leadership in these moments exemplified the courage and professionalism expected of the Ranger Regiment.

Rising to Sergeant Major, Bohn became Operations Sergeant Major of 2nd Battalion, 2nd Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division in Vilseck, Germany. He deployed again—this time to Kosovo with KFOR and later to Iraq for **Operation Iraqi Freedom III**. In 2004, 2-2 Infantry played a critical role in the **Second Battle of Fallujah**, attached to the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force. When his battalion’s command sergeant major was killed in action, Bohn assumed the role, leading his soldiers through some of the most intense combat of the Iraq War.

His career then shifted to training the next generation of infantry soldiers and leaders as both a battalion and brigade CSM at Fort Benning, Georgia. His influence extended beyond his units, shaping future combat leaders who would deploy to Iraq and Afghanistan. In 2009, he was selected as the first CSM for the **International Security Assistance Force – Joint Command (ISAF-JC)** in Kabul, Afghanistan. For two years, he served in this multinational environment, bridging allied forces and guiding enlisted soldiers from across NATO.

Bohn’s leadership trajectory continued upward when he was chosen as the CSM for **U.S. Army Forces Command (FORSCOM)** at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. This assignment placed him at the heart of Army operations, ensuring combat readiness across the largest command in the Army. In 2011, his career culminated with his selection as the **Command Senior Enlisted Leader (CSEL) for U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM)**, making him only the third soldier to ever hold the position. For four years, he advised senior leaders during a period of great instability across Africa, from counterterrorism operations to the Ebola outbreak in West Africa.

After 35 years of active duty, CSM Bohn retired in April 2017. His list of awards and decorations is a testament to his valor, professionalism, and dedication. Among them are the **Distinguished Service Medal, Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal with Valor, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, and Army Achievement Medal**. His campaign medals span every major U.S. operation of his time—Panama, Kuwait, Haiti, Bosnia, Kosovo, Afghanistan, and Iraq. His unit earned the **Presidential Unit Citation** for actions in Fallujah. He also earned some of the most demanding badges in the Army: the **Master Parachutist Badge with Combat Jump Star, Air Assault Badge, Ranger Tab, Expert Infantryman Badge, and the Combat Infantryman Badge (2nd Award)**.

Beyond his military career, Bohn has remained connected to his roots in Michigan, where his family still resides. His story reflects not only a lifetime of military service but also the enduring connection between soldiers and their communities.

CSM Darrin John Bohn’s life in uniform is one of courage, leadership, and sacrifice. He rose from a rifle squad leader in the 101st Airborne to become the senior enlisted leader for U.S. Africa Command, leaving behind a legacy that will inspire soldiers for generations to come.

His 2025 induction into the Michigan Military and Veterans Hall of Honor recognizes not just his accomplishments but the unwavering spirit of a soldier who served his country for 35 years with distinction.
