Michael J. “Mike” Smith, U.S. Coast Guard

Commander Michael J. “Mike” Smith devoted his life to the United States Coast Guard and to the community he came to call home. A 1975 graduate of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, Smith began what would be a distinguished 21-year active duty career that carried him through both afloat and shore assignments. His service brought him to many parts of the country, but his most enduring connection was forged in Grand Haven, Michigan, where from 1990 to 1994 he served as Commanding Officer of Coast Guard Group Grand Haven. It was there that his passion for the service and his appreciation for the community’s unique bond with the Coast Guard deepened.
After retiring from active duty in 1996, Smith and his wife returned to Grand Haven, raising their six children in a town that had already become a second home. Though he could have chosen a quiet retirement, his energy and enthusiasm instead fueled a new mission. In 2006, he became the Executive Director of the Grand Haven Coast Guard Festival Committee. For the next 17 years, Smith transformed the festival into one of the largest celebrations of the Coast Guard in the nation, drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors each summer. His attention to detail, his flair for presentation, and his deep respect for both the Coast Guard and the surrounding communities made the festival a beloved tradition that honored service while strengthening civic pride.
Smith was remembered as a man of infectious enthusiasm and showmanship, known to appear in elaborate patriotic attire and to orchestrate events with precision and care. Under his leadership, the festival marked historic milestones, including the 75th anniversary of the Coast Guard Auxiliary, the service’s 215th birthday, the centennial of Coast Guard aviation, and solemn remembrances of fallen heroes such as the crew of the cutter *Escanaba*. His efforts went beyond the festival itself. He made sure Coast Guard families stationed in the area felt welcome and supported, introducing them to the community with warmth and providing a network of care during holidays and moments of need.
When Smith passed away on April 27, 2023, at the age of 70, his loss was deeply felt across the Coast Guard and throughout the Tri-Cities community of Grand Haven, Ferrysburg, and Spring Lake. His funeral, held with full military honors on May 8, brought together friends, family, shipmates, and countless community members whose lives had been touched by his dedication. For those who knew him, Commander Mike Smith will be remembered not only for his years of service in uniform but also for the lasting legacy of connection, celebration, and pride that he built between the Coast Guard and the people of West Michigan.
He was inducted in the Michigan Military and Veterans Hall of Honor in 2025.
